Operation Maple Leaf
Operation Maple Leaf was started as an engineering class prototype project with the goal of making model rocket landings more precise. After some research, I decided to build a prototype, Avis 1, to test helicopter recovery! Avis flew twice on Estes D12 motors and successfully demonstrated my helicopter recovery mechanism both times. Flight 1 flew with an altimeter on board and Flight 2 flew with an upgraded payload section that included a flexible nosecone for harder landings as well as two onboard cameras!
While helicopter recovery did not necessarily prove to be more precise and convenient than traditional parachutes, especially when paired with a chute release device, I still had a great time designing and building this unique prototype from the ground up and flying it!
